Ginger is Micro-chipped - originally posted 2/21/09

I had planned to have Ginger micro-chipped on Monday, but found the animal shelter where I was going to have it done, is closed on Mondays. One issue I have with our Vet is this - he feels that micro-chipping pets is 1 step away from doing basically the same for people. I see it as a way to try to keep my pet safe. So he suggested I try the animal shelter & sure enough they do it - $35 per pet & that pays for the nationwide registration as well.

Ginger isn't one to try to run away or anything, but I worry when we are traveling that if she was to get away & I couldn't find her, how could someone contact me. So now I don't have to worry as much. Unlike when she went to be groomed, they said she didn't give them any attitude when they inserted it. And she is up playing with Fred & their squeaky toys right now.

I had decided since the temperatures were only in the 20's again today, to just have a quiet day at home, except for the trip to the animal shelter. But right after I read the paper this morning & was settling in with my knitting & a movie - E's girlfriend (or ex-gf depending on who you ask) called saying that she thought she had the flu - was having troubles in dual directions - and could she get me to bring her some 7-Up. I went to Dollar General (we don't have a grocery store as such in our little town, but there are some in the next town that she lives in) and they didn't have 7-Up, but had Sierra Mist - same thing basically. So I got her a 2 liter of that & some immodium, in case she could settle her stomach enough to keep that down. After I got there, I found that she had run out of tp, so I told her I would bring some back. Paper towels just don't work well when you are sick like that! So I got the Ultra Soft Charmin while I was at Wal-mart taking back the extra 3 skeins of yarn I had bought for the prayer shawl.

I also stopped at Office Max since I had a couple of coupon cards that were expiring today worth $25 off. Got an organizer for the gym on clearance, a receipt book & 2 black ink cartridges for my Brother printer - just over $75 worth for a bit over $50. I know already that tomorrow's paper will have a bag wroth 15% off anything that can fit into the bag & I was hoping that my cards wouldn't expire until at least tomorrow. But I do have 3 more worth about $35, so will use them to get some more ink cartridges this next week some time.

Our insurance is giving us fits right now about premiums. Don had 1 week of medical leave with his 1st cataract surgery in January after taking 1 week as vacation. Now he is on 2 weeks of mecidal leave and suddenly we get a bill for 3 months of premiums (supposed to be taken out of his paychecks?) to the tune of $440 and today we get another envelope from them wanting us to give them info to start making automatic drafts from our checking account to cover it. And they have something in there about if we do not pay this, then they will deny payment for his last surgery. He is going to call them Monday to try to straighten it out. We have no issue really with paying for 3 weeks of it, but there is no reason for one thing for us to pay for 13 weeks (3 months)! If that doesn't do it, his union may finally get to do something for him & fight it for him!

  1. I have all three of my dogs microchipped. I've never had to use it but I do have a wanderer in the female black lab. It does give you a peace of mind knowing that IF they are ever picked up they can scan them and get them back to me. Uhm taking care of the might be ex girlfriend, that was very thoughtful of you. Not sure what I would have done in that case.... I have to pay some of my health insurance. It shows on my paystub every time. Have dh check his (unless he's one of the few that has all of it covered by his employer). Seems like his human resources should have told him something if this is what it is.

  2. I haven't used it with Fred, but he is a runner, so I worry that one day I will.

Ex-gf - they dated for about 5-6 years, then broke up last June - supposedly. But they still are together most of the week - just no longer living together & I don't always agree with the way he treats her. There were issues where she started using drugs & had a 1 night stand (she tends to be the jealous type & I have tried to tell her it is surefire way to push him away - he is like me, feels it is a wasted emotion - either you are with me or you aren't), she is going to counseling, taking hiv tests, etc. - he says he isn't sure he can trust her again. She lost her mother 2 years ago last month in a car accident and I think some of this came out of that. She is a sweet girl, still does my hair & such & even gives me a family discount - I did tell her that I would understand if she did not though. Anyway, he said at the time they broke up that he didn't want anyone treating her differently - so I take him at his word on it & I really do think in the end they will work things out - just don't know how long it will take.

That is the weird thing about the insurance - it is taken out of his check weekly - at least our portion. The medical leave was arranged on the phone as I dropped him off from his 1st post-surgery check-up after the 1st surgery. I do know the woman he talked with was in CA on a business meeting. So I am not sure where the screw-up came about. But I hope they get it straightened out. It seems to me like somewhere down the line they are acting as if he weren't still on the payroll! I just know in the past, I had quite the hassles with them trying to keep our youngest on it when she was in college. Twice a year, it seemed like, they tried to boot her off & I would have to spend hours on the phone with them about the fact that she was a full-time college student that was supposed to be on our insurance. Was not unhappy when she decided to get married & that took care of it on our end.

  3. Both of our Huskies were microchipped...we didn't ever have to use it, but they ran off a LOT (one of the reasons we gave them away). It is good peace of mind, just in case their collar falls off OR some bad person decides to steal them.

  4. I wish they had of had micro-chipping when we lost our little chihuahua/mini Mmanchester mix years ago. He was on a cable on the clothes line in our back yard & I am almost certain someone thought he was a baby doberman. But he just disappeared while I was in the house with the babies.

I was in a panic! Couldn't find Ginger's folder of shot records & such - usually keep it in my computer bag so that it is always with me when I travel & such. But I could find Fred's in there, but not Ginger's. Tore the desk apart, etc. Finally vaguely remembered taking it with me when she hurt her knee in early January. Found it tucked in the visor of the van! Now I can put their new city tags receipts in the correct folders!
