Cruising with Audrey to the Bahamas - August 2009 - originally posted 2/27/10

We first met in Kansas City near the airport the night before we flew out to Miami - which was Thursday August 13, 2009. We flew out of KS City on August 14th. J drove A down & then I took her home afterwards before coming on home.

We had to be at the airport early! Then we are in the gate & hear a kid of about 12 sobbing horribly! We finally get on the plane late & find ourselves sitting in front of the family with the sobbing kid! Just before the door is shut, the parents take the kid & get off.

We arrive in Miami, get our car & drive to West Palm Beach to my in-law's house until Monday AM. A's friend L, who was also her maid of honor, meets us there. We have a wonderful relaxing visit. The girls & I even getting in their pool, me knitting on my 1st pair of socks, etc.

Monday, L leaves & then we leave. Our ship sails at 4 pm, I believe. We get to Miami, drop off the car, get a taxi to the docks, check our bags (1 duffle bag gets destroyed - the entire end ripped off, but I think they manage to find if not everything, then nearly everything! - including an ugly shoe that didn't belong to us!). Before the ship (Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas) sailed, we got our first mojito! That felt so decadent to me!

This cruise, we didn't have any sea days, Monday left Miami, Tuesday in Nassau, Wednesday in Coco Cay,, Thursday in Key West & Friday back to Miami. Even with wearing my knee brace, A & I managed to walk approximately 9 miles across Nassau & saw many terrific sites. We did a little shopping and then we stopped in a local restaurant & had a late lunch before heading back to the ship. Then we got another drink & went out onto the deck to relax as the ship sailed, until it started sprinkling on us.

Tuesday was Coco Cay - a privately owned island owned by Royal Caribbean. A wanted to snorkel, I was originally intending to try to walk the nature trail about it, but after she was stung by jelly fish several times & considering how much stress I had put on my knee the day before, we just decided to head back to the ship and then go & enjoy the massages that we had arranged for the day before. Of course when we got to the spa, we found out that had mistakenly put us down for the exact same things so while they had told us before that we wouldn't be able to be together for them at that time, they had actually put us into the same room. So we got it corrected on what we each wanted & it all worked out - I got scalp, neck, shoulder, back, foot & ankles massages - she got a total body exfoliation, milk bath, scalp, neck & shoulders, I believe.

Thursday was Key West. We walked a lot again while we found Hemingway's home, the Little White House and the Southern most point of the US. We even got to see the 6 toed cats of Hemingway's and then we had a late lunch & drinks at Sloppy Joe's before heading back to the ship.

Last year when we had cruised, we felt we had very rude & horrible tablemates & so we only tried eating dinner with them 2 of the nights, then gave up. This year, we had 2 great couples we shared a table with & we not only had dinner with them every night, we also all stayed at the table talking way after everyone else was leaving! The one couple had just gotten married on Saturday before we cruised & they were from Kansas City. The other couple was a longer married couple from WI, if I remember correctly.

Friday we caught a taxi to the airport & tried to get our tickets moved to standby so that we could leave earlier, but were unable to. So we spent a lot of the day in the airport in Miami. And we seemed to have some of the worst luck when it came to people on the planes! We ended up sitting with a couple who were having an argument! So when the attendant said they needed to move 2 young kids out of the exit row - A & I volunteered to take their places! Then we were also able to spread out a bit & enjoy ourselves.

We were late leaving Miami, so barely made our flight in Detroit - she ran ahead & I came behind because of my knee. We were the last ones on the flight I think, but we made it. We got into Kansas City, caught our shuttle, got the van & headed to her house in MO. Saturday morning, we got up, I got ready & headed to Iowa to visit my natural dad's youngest brother's family - got about 30 miles out & A had changed her mind, so I went back for her. Ended up not getting to my uncles as early as I thought, so a cousin & his wife had to leave, but we did get to see 2 aunts, 1 uncle and 5 cousins before we then headed back to A's. I got up early on Sunday & hit the road home. Made it home about 5 pm & was able to get the dogs before unpacking & getting ready to head back to work on Monday.

I can't wait until I can cruise again!

Laptop, Cruise - originally posted 5/20/09

I also had promised a picture of my new laptop! I love having it!

It is sitting on a Targus Cool mat I think it is called - has a fan built in & runs off the USB port of the laptop to help keep it cool. I put a little square of post-it notes in front of it, so you can see kind of how small it is.

We have 89 days left until our cruise ship sails. Which means we have 85 days until we both head to Kansas City, where we will spend the night before our flight. We fly out at about 6:30 am. Going to be so much fun!

Today A sent me a message that she had seen that tickets were down for $269 per person, so she called them & got us a $120 refund on our tickets, which makes it even better!

  1. Oh! I want a laptop. Great going on getting the refund too. It's great that they did that for you guys.

  2. I agree Jessica especially since many of those companies basically tell you SOL when you find the same thing at a cheaper price and they already have your money.

  3. Yay cruising!! Especially when it is cheap!
    :-D

  4. I agree with all of you!

Jessica, the good part of this laptop is that since I bought it refurbished, it was only $298 on Dell's web site.

This & That - originally posted 4/23/09

It's been a while since I posted. Had planned for this post to include pictures of my haircut & color like B was asking for. I got the pictures - not real good when doing them yourself & then I know I am critical since I hate having my picture taken. But then I started having issues with my laptop. First it was email issues & I thought I had that straightened out when I got an upgrade to my SpamBully and Outlook Express started working again. But then Monday evening, I got the blue screen of death! Unmountable Boot Sequence, I think it was. It wouldn't even start in Safe mode!

Tuesday, I had planned to be out of the house early to take it to be looked at. But I didn't get it done & since I wasn't sure of their hours, I just decided to check as I drove past on my way to work - 8 am to 6 pm. Good, that meant I could stop on my way home - especially since I had gone ahead and put it in the van with me!

Stopped by, told them my fear was that this meant the hard drive had died. Well, the young man I was speaking with doesn't think so. He thinks Windows just forgot how to work right - so it needs to be rerouted to where it needs to go. But it's a 4 day lead time, so will be the weekend before they get to it most likely. He thought if that was it, then about $80-140 would do it. But if it is the hard drive, to install a new one and recover all that can be recovered, it's probably about $250, but I gave them permission to do that, if the other didn't work without having to call me first, as long as it wouldn't be over that amount.

But in the meantime, Monday night I went ahead and bought me a new toy. I had seen a little 9" laptop at Target a few months ago - it's small enough to go in your purse! It only had an 8 gb hard drive, if I remember correctly & they didn't sell it in the store. But I got to hunting on Dell.com and I found an Inspiron 10 mini for less than $300. So I went ahead & bought it. I still like my bigger laptop for at home & such, but after my issues with my neck last fall & winter, this little one sounds really enticing. I ordered one with 160 gb hard drive. It only comes with 1 gb memory, but I might check to see if that can be made bigger after I get it. It should be here by Tuesday. And it will be small enough to toss into my purse or knitting bag when I go on the cruise, etc.

The last 3 days now I have been getting a second 1/2 mile walk in after getting home from the gym. Two of the 3 nights I have gotten home early enough that it was still light enough to walk without needing anything to make sure people can see me, but the other night I was glad I had bought some reflector bands with flashing red lights in them from Avon. They are Curves. I hadn't even realized any of the neighbors were outside, but the following evening one couple spoke as I went past & we chatted a bit about the dogs. He mentioned that they had really been able to notice me the night before with my lights flashing.

I get in a bad slump in the winter, depressed, eating too much, etc. So my weight loss has pretty much stayed the same since about January. So I am hoping the extra walking & being back to eating salads will be the boost I need. I really want to get at least another 20-40# off before A & I go on our cruise the middle of August.

Oh yes, A & I have booked another cruise! We will be on Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas August 17-21, sailing out of Miami. We are planning to meet in Kansas City on the Thursday night before & fly out early Friday. Rent a car in Miami & drive to West Palm Beach to my in-law's until Monday, then drive to Miami, drop our bags off, return the car & catch the shuttle back, then fly back to Kansas City on the 21st. I will most likely drive A back to their home before I head back here. The cruise takes us to Key West, Nassau & Cococay Bahamas.

I still need to fly up to Seattle to see my mil as well, but think I may try a long weekend - like Labor Day. Will have to check with D's brother, M to see if that would work for them. I would just plan to rent a car and then not have to worry with bothering them for rides.

  1. One thing I have going in this house, there seems to be a computer in EVERY room. Though, like you, I perfer the lap top. Was weight at the doctor's office yesterday and I was up 4 pounds!!! Couldn't belive it so weight myself today and yep, I've gain 4 pounds. Ugh, guess I need to reasses what I am doing.....

  2. I actually have 2 desktops currently at home, but I was in the midst of clearing things off the Dell that J & A gave me several years ago to the HP that I had bought & then given to E for the gym when I was given the Dell. But the HP is slow compared to the Dell and doesn't have a wireless card in it, so I plan to bring the Dell down here to the gym for the counter - where we can put in payments & such online. I figure I can set up 3 users - 1 for E, 1 for me & 1 that others can use without getting to our info.

I didn't get my before the gym walk since I was trying to find the FedEx Home delivery person - as I was leaving to go for the walk, I noticed a FedEx notice in my flowerbed - they tried to deliver my mini today! Darn it - I didn't find them, so I am using E's laptop right now!

  3. Isn't that how it always is, they come when you're not there. Then you get to play the 'waiting game' and hope that you catch them tomorrow. Luckily, the hub is close to my home and I'll check the box that I'll pick it up there.

  4. Well, if D had been home then it might not have been a deal & even them leaving it might not have been a big deal (although I wanted it today!), except that finding the ticket in the flower bed, makes me leery of where I would find the laptop!

They told me it could delay the delivery to change the address to work (almost did that to begin with), but I hope it doesn't - should have it tomorrow or else I will be parking myself down near the office on Saturday. Don't want to wait until Tuesday!

It's been a while - Originally posted 3/9/09

Well, I certainly didn't intend to be nearly 2 weeks getting back here - but here it is!

I am finally caught up on my sleep some. Never did really get much of anything accomplished this past weekend, but I did doze off & on. I knitted on a baby blanket as well. Should be able to post a picture of it soon. I watched a few DVD's, when I wasn't napping. I even managed to knock off my glass of strawberry margarita on Friday evening!

I couldn't decide which to buy - so bought both strawberry & lime flavors. Cooled the strawberry off & poured myself a glass. Then started dozing on the couch and when Fred started barking, I threw out my hand I guess and in doing so, over went my glass. So I just decided to try to go to sleep instead of getting another glass.

Saturday we had some storms move through and at least 1 tornado touched down. We had hail & rain at our place, but even though it seemed to come from the north and that was the side of the house that my van was on - so it wasn't protected by the house itself, I haven't found any damage to it.

Today I started training a young man at work. Don't know if he is to be just a part-time temporary employee or a permanent one. But I know he will be here through the middle of April or so. R leaves on March 25th to go to help her parents out - her mom is having several surgical procedures - heart valve repair, heart valve replacement and a bypass. Then right after she is to be dismissed, her dad goes in for his 1st cataract surgery. Then just a few days after she gets back from this trip, she & S already have flight arrangements made for a trip to South Carolina.

I was a little worried that a mid to late 20's young man might have an issue with being told what to do by a nearly 50 year old woman, but he seems to take instruction very well. He is married with a small child and says that at the least, he would like to take the filling orders and stocking warehouse jobs off my hands. Which would be a big help at times in particular.

A has been searching for cruises for us again. I think we may have possibly decided to go for a 5 night cruise out of Miami, I believe it was, that would include Key West, the Bahamas & Belize in the itinerary. Of course, since we would need to get from Kansas & Missouri to Miami and my in-laws are very near there, I think it would be nice to take just a bit more than 1 week off. The cruise would sail on Monday morning. So I think we would try to fly from Kansas City (3 hours each way for each of us) on Friday evening before, so have Saturday & Sunday with my in-laws, then either rent a car, catch a shuttle or a taxi to the port on Monday morning. Then we would arrive back on Saturday morning and we could either spend a little more time with the in-laws or drop into Orlando to visit a friend of A's before heading back home. If we drove, we would have more flexibility, but might have less time - about a 21 hour drive from A's & it would take me 7 hours to get to her place before that - unless we got J to drive her to meet me & then we either meet up with him again at the end or I drive her home. So don't know yet what way we will go. Would like D to go with us & at least visit his dad & step-mom, but so far, he isn't being agreeable to that! He likes to stay home - I like to travel!

Ah Key West is one of my favorite places to visit. VERY 'colorful' town. Only thing is it can get really crowded when cruise ships are in. If you decide on this, I can tell you which things to do and not. Oh and take a lot of money, EVERYTHING in Key West is expensive.
As for the new employee, with the economy the way it is, I'm sure he is glad to have the job, regardless of who he has to work under.....
